Liepaja International Airport
Is regional airport in the west of Latvia that is certified for international air traffic. It is situated 7 km of Liepaja town centre. The distance from the airport to the capital of Latvia - Riga is 210 km, to Lithuania border 60 km. Territory of the airport covers 217,6 ha and integrated within Liepaja Special Economic Zone.
History
Liepaja airfield was built in 1940 and until 1960 it was used as military airfield
In 1960 airport was transferred Civil Aviation and from Liepaja airport was performed up to 6 schedule flights a day to the capital - Riga and other major cities of the former Soviet Union (Leningrad, Moscow, Kiev, Minsk, Kaliningrad etc.). At that time, servicing circa 100 000 passengers and 900t cargoes annually.
In 1993 the airport was transferred to Liepaja municipality and was founded Aviacompany Liepaja Ltd.
In the 1st of June 1998 the sole owner of Aviacompany Liepaja Ltd. (100 shares) became Liepaja City Council.
At present Liepaja airport serves charter, business and general aviation flights. Mainly the following types of aircrafts land at the airport: C-141, C-130, AN-12, Jak-42, Tu-134, An-24, AN-26, An-28, L-410, Cessna, Piper, Tobago etc. (Photo gallery). Dimensions of the runway are 2002m long and 40 m wide. It is equipped with navigation facilities and lightning system for night and marginal weather operations.

Development perspectives
Development perspectives of Liepaja airport are to ensure regular traffic and provide safe and qualitative service for the passengers.
Liepaja City Council has made its support Liepaja airport by investing in passenger terminal reconstruction in 2000 (photo).
Technical possibilities of the airport are adjustable to establish an industrial and technological park, transport logistical centre as well to locate different training bases. In 2000 the letter of Intent was signed to participate in the international project "First Class Industrial Park Network" (www.fcipnetwork.com
The Airport is within the territory of Liepaja Special Economic Zone - (www.portofliepaja.lv that offers highly advantageous tax allowances for business activity and construction.
